Is Your Data Exchange Protected with Dynamics NAV/Business Central?

The purpose of an ERP system is to integrate data and business processes to make operations more efficient, automate tasks and save time. In the process of integration and sharing, data security and typical user access can be overlooked. Here’s how to ensure your data is protected in Dynamics 365 Business Central, formerly known as Dynamics NAV.

Data integration and cloud sharing functionality mean that other programs and applications linked to your system can connect to your business data. For example, new features in Business Central allow connectivity among different data sets, raising security concerns.

It is the case with sensitive financial data. You may not want certain users and applications to view particular data. The answer? Change the protection level for data sent and received! Here is how to do it, as explained on dynamicsnavconsultant.com.

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central enables customers to upgrade their entry-level accounting software and legacy ERP systems with a single, comprehensive solution to manage finances, operations, sales and customer service. It is a cloud-based, all-in-one business management solution that helps organisations streamline business processes, improve customer interactions and enable growth.

You can change Protection Level by setting it to the default EncryptAndSign in the Client Services options. Configurable options include Prohibited File Types and Token Signing Key.  This will ensure that all data exchanged via the platform is encrypted and authenticated.

Note that this may cause more traffic in data exchanges because of the additional layers of encryptions and signing to ensure data is legitimated and the user is authenticated and allowed to view the data exchanged.

User access can be disabled in the Active Directory, which means limiting user access to the data exchanges, even if the user is not involved in sending or receiving the data in question.

Before making any security changes that could affect the behaviour visibility of your business data, ensure that you understand the system requirements and capabilities.

For example, if you are using Dynamics NAV on-premises hosted on a local server, your data will stay local, and additional encryptions and layers of security may not be needed, given the fact that it will take more processing power for data transfers.

For businesses running Dynamics NAV on-premise, changing Protection Level to None can significantly boost the Windows client for end users. Change this protection level for users that are using NAV locally and are using Windows Login to access the system.

It is highly recommended to consult a Dynamics NAV/Business Central expert to learn more about security protection and encryption and adjust your data security settings accordingly to leverage the best functionality of your ERP platform.
